Our client is a Merchant of Record selling software worldwide. As Principal Frontend Engineer, you define and advance the frontend architecture across teams — Next.js, TypeScript, React, and accessible, semantic HTML — turning architectural vision into practical guardrails, technical milestones, and coaching that keep delivery consistent. A senior IC role with real influence: you align technical choices with business goals, not the other way round.

THE ROLE

You own the overall architecture of frontend systems and the standards that hold them together — code quality, maintainability, accessibility, and performance. You validate ideas with proofs of concept, translate business problems into practical frontend solutions, and partner with product, design leadership, engineering managers, and senior engineers on direction. You mentor engineers in architectural thinking, communicate complex topics clearly to non-technical stakeholders, and bring in innovations — including AI-assisted development — without letting standards slip.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Own the overall frontend architecture and define key milestones and critical technical requirements.
• Drive scalability, performance, and cross-team code reuse across frontend solutions.
• Validate ideas through proofs of concept, and translate business problems into practical frontend solutions.
• Set coding standards and promote best practices — code quality, maintainability, accessibility, performance.
• Partner with product, design leadership, engineering managers, and senior frontend engineers on direction.
• Communicate complex technical topics clearly to non-technical stakeholders and create transparency on requirements.
• Mentor engineers in architectural thinking, and introduce innovations (incl. AI-assisted development) that improve UX.

WHAT YOU BRING

The real must-haves:

• Strong proficiency in modern frontend: Next.js, TypeScript, React, and accessible, semantic HTML.
• Strong software-design principles — SOLID, DRY, YAGNI, KISS.
• Experience leading complex frontend initiatives as a principal, technical lead, or project lead.
• Proven ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Hands-on CSS: pure CSS, preprocessors, and CSS-in-JS; strong API design (REST and GraphQL).
• Leveraging AI to accelerate development while holding to engineering standards and technical guardrails.
• Interviewing and assessing engineers, and promoting best practices across diverse audiences.

Nice-to-haves:

• Experience with NestJs.
• Building shared frontend platforms, design systems, or component libraries.
• Optimising performance for large-scale web applications.
